Meet the new Federal MP for Bonner – Kara Cook
…and an opportunity to meet her this week
It’s been a little while since the Federal Election and it’s also been a little while since we followed up the result…
We blame the fact that the official result in Bonner was significantly delayed – even though the political pundits had already announced their prediction, we decided to play it safe and wait for the official announcement (even though that was also a while ago now).
What is interesting is that our very small sample survey just a few days before election day predicted that Labor would win with 53.85% of the primary vote. This was not quite accurate as the actual primary vote won by Labor in Bonner was 39.51% (55% after preferences), but enough to win the seat with a swing of 9.95% to Labor.
The electorate of Bonner was created in 2004 and since then has been held by the Liberals/LNP in 6 out of 7 elections, with Labor only winning once in 2007 (Kerry Rea MP from 2007-2010), so the Labor win this year has been quite an upset of the prevailing status quo.
What is also interesting is that now politicians at all three levels of government for Wynnum are female for – we believe – the very first time.
Our new member is Kara Cook (main photo), who has a background as a lawyer specialising in domestic violence law and as a Councillor in Brisbane City Council for Morningside.
